Prieta, meaning the dark one, although completely innocent is still quite primitive in her thinking. Though not the main character she is the catalyst that makes the story work. She falls in love with her foster sister's boy friend Bret who more than anything in the world wants to marry the Bishop's daughter Norma although he does not meet the standards she has set for a husband.
